2013 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

The iconic Mercedes-Benz G class is a bit expensive at $113,000, and certainly not thrifty when it comes to fuel, but Mercedes might have the answer for those looking for a G-Class in an affordable and fuel-friendly package.

It’s known internally as the City-G, and is slated to be cheaper and smaller than the upcoming A-Class based GLA. AutoCar reports that development has started on the VW Polo sized vehicle, and that it will look to G-Class and Ener-G-Force Concept for design cues.

The new vehicle is using a platform that is developed jointly with Renault-Nissan, and can support at least two different wheelbase lengths of varying width and can be outfitted in front or four-wheel drive layouts.

The new platform will also underpin next generation B-Class, A-Class, CLA-Class and GLA-Class vehicles.

A range of new four-cylinder, direct-injection gas and diesel engines are currently under development as part of the joint venture with Renault-Nissan and will surely make it into this mini-G Class SUV.  Expect the City-G to hit showrooms in 2016.
